PAMAI 2010 "National Training Conference"

This year's PAMAI (Professional Association of Martial Arts Instructors) National Training Conference celebrated its 30th Year Anniversary. It was held on January 29th and 30th, 2010. The Martial Arts Center was honored to host this year's event. The PAMAI is a yearly gathering of Yudansha (Black Belts), Instructors and School Owners who endeavor to increase their knowledge in Combative Training , Healing Arts and Teaching Principles. A special feature of this year's PAMAI was an inspirational session on "What it means to be a Black Belt" by Hanshi Steve Roensch, 9th Dan and founder of PAMAI. In Shuri-ryu Karate, we have various performance categories which are applied to Kata (formal exercise). One category is the general performance category which emphasizes basic demonstration of technique combinations and allows for the perfection of power, flow, timing and transition. The performance category in this video emphasizes advance demonstration of Jujitsu principle and application. Application will vary based on the performer's experience and understanding of motion. Shuri-Ryu "Robert Trias Founder's Cup"

Great Job to all the students who competed in this year's "Robert Trias Founder's Cup" tournament. This tournament was the first of many to come in honor of O'Sensei Robert Trias. O'Sensei Trias is considered the Father of Karate in America and has many documented first, i.e. the 1st Karate School and the 1st Karate Tournament. The 2008 International Symposium in Columbia, S.Carolina was great as usual. Hanshi Ridgely Abele did a great job, as well as all the feature Instructors at the event. The Martial Arts Center students attended the "All Shuri-Ryu Cup 2008" competition for the 2nd year since its inception. This was another great tournament put on by Hanshi Ridgely Abele. The origin of the three Naihanchi katas is unknown. We do know for a fact that they were practiced as one single kata by Okinawan Shuri-ryu Master Sokon Matsumura around 1825. Naihanchi was, however, handed down to Matsumura from earlier times. We can assume that Naihanchi is well over one hundred and seventy years old, possibly dating back to the era of Tode Sakugawa, Suekata Chogun and Ito Gusukuma. Naihanchi was also a favorite form of Yusutsune Itosu (1830-1915).

Around 1895, Master Choki Motobu popularized Naihanchi by performing the three forms as “one kata” on a daily basis at least five hundred times. The three Naihanchi katas, performed as one became known as “Motobu’s Kata”, and he is said to have stated many times, “ There is only one kata necessary to develop and excel in Karate, and that is Naihanchi as one. Motobu’s favorite hand form when performing Naihanchi was the forefinger punch (keiko ken zuki).”
